On 17th August 2025, a historic moment unfolded in the world of mathematics and research, as India’s first privately funded mathematics research institution was officially inaugurated in Mumbai. The event was marked by an auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony, setting the stage for the launch of a pioneering institution dedicated to the advancement of mathematical research – Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI)

The inauguration ceremony featured a heartfelt address by Abhishek Lodha, who emphasised the vast potential of India’s young minds in the field of mathematics. “India has immense talent, and we must identify it, nurture it, and show young people that mathematics can be a viable and rewarding career path,” said Abhishek. He reiterated the long-term commitment of the institution, stating, “LMSI will not just be an institution but a significant contributor to India’s progress.”

Other prominent speakers included Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Manju Lodha, Ashish Singh Kumar, and Prof. V.K. Murty, all of whom highlighted the vital role mathematics plays in national development. Their speeches reinforced the importance of creating an environment for mathematical research to thrive, which will ultimately contribute to the country’s growth.

Following the addresses, the event saw an inspiring Colloquium talk by Prof. V.K. Murty and Fields Medalist Prof. Manjul Bhargava, both of whom shared their insights on the future of mathematical research.
The evening culminated with an exclusive tour of the LMSI institute at Lodha New Cuffe Parade, Wadala, followed by a lavish dinner and a classical performance. The event was a testament to the vision and commitment towards shaping a brighter future for India through the power of mathematics.
