This dynamic city is a hub of economic activity, attracting professionals and businesses from all over the world. Every year, Mumbai attracts individuals from diverse backgrounds, all in pursuit of a brighter future. With millions of people commuting daily, efficient and reliable transportation has become a necessity. Hence, the city of dreams is undergoing a complete infrastructure overhaul and boasts unparalleled travel connectivity, with well-developed highways and the renowned Mumbai Metro. A recent addition to this ever-expanding metro network is the Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as Colaba-Seepz-Metro or Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line.

The Mumbai Metro is an ambitious project, which includes the exciting Mumbai Metro Line 3, an underground line that has sparked the interest of real estate developers and citizens alike. Read on to learn about this first-of-its-kind infrastructure project in Mumbai and understand its many benefits.

The Mumbai Metro Line 3 Route Map

The Aqua Line 3 is Mumbai's first underground metro spanning 33.5 km. It will have 26 underground stations and one at-grade station. Running from Navy Nagar to Aarey Depot, the line will connect with various other transport systems, including metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and the airport. The project aims to ease road congestion and alleviate the burden on the Western Railway Line between Bandra and Churchgate.

Interchange stations along the Aqua Line 3:

- The SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronic Export Processing Zone) station links to Mumbai Metro Line 6,
Churchgate and Grant Road station will connect to the Western Railway line.
- Mumbai Central Station will connect to the Western Railway line and the National Rail Network for inter-city travel.
- Mahalaxmi station will also connect to two lines - the Western Railway line and the Mumbai Monorail.
- Dadar and CSMT stations will connect to the Central Railway line, the Harbour Railway line and the National Rail Network.
- The CSMIA T2 (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Terminal 2) Metro station connects to the Mumbai Metro's Red Line 7.
- Marol Naka station will connect to Line 1 or the Blue Line of the Mumbai Metro, which runs between Ghatkopar and Versova.
- The Income Tax Office (BKC) station will connect to Line 2 or the Yellow Line of the Mumbai Metro, which runs between Dahisar and Mankhurd.

Highlighted Features of Mumbai Metro Line 3

- As per recent media reports, the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3 is anticipated to become operational soon.
- It is expected that the initial phase, covering the Aarey to BKC metro map route, will be accessible to the public by April 2024. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 33,000 crores, with funding from a variety of contractors such as Larsen & Toubro and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co.
- As for the trains themselves, French rolling stock manufacturers Alstom designed, manufactured, and commissioned 31 lightweight, fully furnished modern passenger train sets of eight cars each. Themed on 'Dynamic Fluidism' that takes inspiration from the city, these trains maximise space efficiency, with each trainset carrying 3,000 passengers per trip. These metro trains are also estimated to reduce 35% of overall traffic and help in reducing air and noise pollution.
- The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation-MMRC- has decided to introduce trains on Mumbai Metro line 3 with emergency doors at both ends which will help passengers safely exit in an emergency.
- Continuous mobile connectivity will be ensured using in-building solutions, which involve installing antennas and repeaters within underground stations and tunnels.
- The trains on line 3 will have an exceptional capacity of 3,000 passengers per ride.
- Each train will feature full air-conditioning and operate with a Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system for autonomous operations.
