PUNE: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said the state government would soon give its clearance to the second phase of the metro rail project. The government was looking forward to integrate services of metro rail and buses of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited to strengthen the city’s public transport system and provide an end-to-end solution for better commuting.
Fadnavis said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of the metro project on Saturday. We will not stop here. District guardian minister Girish Bapat and myself are working for the second phase of the metro from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. We are in the process of finalising the details. Also, more metro routes will come up in the city.” Fadnavis was speaking at a function organised to inaugurate the second phase of V D Savarkar’s memorial on Karve Road.
The chief minister said the government was initiating steps to make Pune an advanced city. A few months back, the prime minister launched the Smart City mission from Pune. Pune figures in the list of important cities in the country. “We are turning Pune into a Smart City,” he added.
Fadnavis said the Mula-Mutha river development plan was yet another project promoted by the Union government. Pune is probably the only city to have received a full funding of Rs 900 crore from the central government for developing rivers.
Fadnavis said Savarkar had dedicated his entire life for the country and was an inspiration for many freedom fighters. It was sad that Savarkar’s work was not being recognised by historians and political leaders. Attempts were made by people who do not know much about the country to remove Veer Savarkar’s memorial plaque from Andaman jail. “Such attempts will not remove Savarkar’s memories from countrymen’s hearts,” he added.
